Key Insights
The KNLTB's Route to the Top is arguably the most directly comparable document to Tennis Canada's WPDP in this study. Its evidence-based approach, explicit use of the Athletic Skills Model, and detailed training load recommendations make it an excellent reference. For Tennis Ireland, the Netherlands' model is particularly relevant given similar population size and club-based structure.

Development Philosophy & Foundation
The KNLTB's 'Route to the Top' (MOT โ Meerjarenopleidingsplan Tennis) is one of the most evidence-based LTPD documents in European tennis. It is explicitly built on the Athletic Skills Model (ASM) and Long-Term Athlete Development principles, and draws on input from ex-top players and top coaches. The MOT was revised in July 2023 and is available in English.
Technical Development Framework
The MOT provides detailed technical benchmarks for each stage, including specific stroke production criteria and equipment progression. The Athletic Skills Model underpins technical development, emphasising fundamental movement skills before tennis-specific skills.
Tactical Development Framework
Tactical development is introduced from the Learning to Train stage. The MOT includes specific tactical objectives for each stage, with increasing complexity through the pathway.
Physical Development & Athleticism
The Athletic Skills Model (ASM) is central to physical development. The MOT includes detailed training and competition load recommendations by age and gender, with separate guidelines for girls and boys. Sensitive training periods are explicitly mapped.
Mental Performance & Psychology
Mental, cognitive, and emotional development is explicitly addressed in the MOT. The document includes specific mental development objectives for each stage.
Character, Values & Life Skills
The KNLTB emphasises the role of parents throughout the pathway. The MOT includes a specific section on the role of parents in player development.
Competition Pathway & Structure
National junior circuit โ Tennis Europe โ ITF Junior circuit โ ATP/WTA Challenger circuit. The MOT includes specific competition load recommendations by age.
